Negative taken for September 8, 1960, Arkansas Gazette article "Cherokees Mark Holiday at End of Trail of Tears," B1:2. The Cherokee National Holiday has been held at Tahlequah, Cherokee County, Oklahoma, since 1953. The celebration commemorates the founding of the Cherokee Nation on September 6, 1839, when several factions of Cherokees made peace with one another and drew up a constitution. A monument to General Stand Watie, the only Cherokee General in the Confederate Army, is located in the town square of Tahlequah.

Stand Watie, also known as Standhope, Oowatie, Degataga, and Isaac S. Watie, was a Cherokee Nation leader and brigadier general in the Confederate Army. He was born into the Cherokee Nation in Calhoun, Georgia, on December 12, 1806, and was educated at a Moravian mission school in Spring Place, Georgia.
